Hakeem Jeffries Urges AFT to Help Democrats Win House Majority
Jeffries said House Democrats would protect Social Security and Medicare, lower costs and fight corruption if the party wins the chamber.
On Thursday, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed the American Federation of Teachers national convention, urging the 1.8 million-member union to help Democrats win enough House races in November to secure a majority next year.
Weingarten criticized the House Committee on Education and the Workforce on Wednesday for approving 10 bills to dismantle the Department of Education, arguing the committee prioritizes fighting unions over helping students.
The AFT remains a major benefactor to Democrats, contributing more than $1.9 million to candidates and $2.1 million to the House Majority PAC during the 2024 election cycle, according to Open Secrets.
Jeffries pledged that Democrats would fight to "clean up corruption" within President Donald Trump's administration and rein in ICE initiatives, which he called "completely and totally out of control."
Georgia Democrat Raphael Warnock also spoke at the convention, emphasizing that public education and Pell grants enabled his rise to the Senate while warning many children today lack such opportunities.
