Royal Surrey Hospital Offers Popsicles to Ease Anesthesia Side Effects
The quality improvement project aims to ease thirst, nausea and sore throat after surgery, with early feedback from patients and staff positive, the hospital said.
Patients recovering from surgery at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford are now receiving popsicles to battle anesthesia side effects including thirst, sore throat, and nausea.
The anesthetic department developed this initiative in collaboration with recovery nurses and the University of Surrey to explore whether frozen treats can reduce post-operative discomfort.
Consultant anesthetist and project lead Kai Patel said, "This has been a true multidisciplinary effort involving anesthetics, recovery nursing, researchers and charity support."
Early feedback from patients and staff has been extremely positive, while the team will collect data over the coming weeks to evaluate patient experience and recovery outcomes.
Royal Surrey Charity funded the project through the Trust's "Dragon's Den"-style Bid for Better initiative, which allows colleagues to pitch ideas for improving patient care.
