Honda, Acura recall ~100K vehicles, trace problem to natural disaster
Honda says a supplier material change after a natural disaster may cause the front passenger airbag to deploy incorrectly.
Honda is recalling approximately 100,000 vehicles due to an airbag defect flagged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the front passenger seat's weight sensor.
A natural disaster forced Honda's supplier to change motherboard materials, causing a capacitor in the sensor's circuit board to crack after humidity exposure and create a short circuit.
The recall affects more than a dozen models from 2016 to 2026, including the Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Acura; Honda has received 228 warranty claims as of May 14.
In a crash, airbags may deploy "for whom deployment should be suppressed, increasing the risk of injury," Honda said, though the company reported no injuries or deaths since February 2021.
Owners will receive notification letters beginning July 6 to schedule sensor replacement at authorized dealers, and individuals may search their vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA recall website.
