Hoag Advances Plans for Organ Transplant Center
Hoag is launching liver and kidney transplant services by recruiting leading transplant specialists to expand clinical capabilities and accelerate program development.
Hoag announced this week it is launching a liver and kidney transplant program, recruiting Dr. Aaron Ahearn from USC Keck School of Medicine as surgical director, pending regulatory approval.
Orange County, home to more than 3 million residents, has lacked a liver transplant center since 2005 when UCI Medical Center closed its program. Patients currently must travel outside the region for care.
Part of the campus's $1 billion expansion, the new program is led by Dr. Kenneth Chang, executive medical director of Hoag's Digestive Health Institute, with a trial phase operating on 10 to 20 patients in year one.
Ahearn said the program aims to provide access across the local community, allowing patients to stay near their support systems. The team plans to ramp up to 50 to 70 liver transplants annually after the trial phase.
Hospital officials plan to expand into other organ transplants after establishing liver and kidney services. Hoag will recruit additional staff over the next year to build out the institute and support future capabilities.
