HMRC Sets 31 August Child Benefit Deadline for Teenagers
HMRC says payments worth up to £1,406.60 a year will stop unless parents confirm teenagers remain in approved education or training.
HMRC warned parents of 16 to 19-year-olds they must confirm continued enrollment in approved education by August 31, or Child Benefit payments will stop automatically.
Child Benefit remains payable for youngsters in full-time, non-advanced education, including Scottish Highers and NVQs up to Level 3, but excludes university degrees and standard apprenticeships in England.
Around 1.5 million parents received reminder letters this year, with more than 372,000 already extending claims digitally. Families can complete the process in minutes using the HMRC app or GOV.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Chief Customer Officer, stated, "Child Benefit is a vital source of support for many families and we don't want anyone to miss out." Those already partway through previously reported courses do not need to contact HMRC.
The warning precedes GCSE results day this Thursday, August 20, when hundreds of thousands of teenagers will determine their next steps. Claimants with individual adjusted net income exceeding £60,000 should note potential liability for the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
