HMRC urges shoppers to report vape shops, barbers and 'dodgy shops' in new campaign
HMRC will carry out more than 30,000 interventions and says anonymous public tips will help target tax fraud, money laundering and illicit tobacco sales.
HMRC is urging the public to report suspicious high street businesses through its improved Report Tax Fraud service, which now allows anonymous tips regarding suspected tax fraud, money laundering, and labour exploitation.
More than 30,000 interventions are planned by the tax authority this year to dismantle criminal networks, specifically targeting tax fraud, money laundering, labour exploitation, and the sale of illicit tobacco and vapes.
Supporting this push, the Home Office launched the High Street Organised Crime Unit in May with £30 million in funding, coordinating HMRC, Trading Standards, police partners, and the National Crime Agency.
Chancellor John Healey noted that many high streets suffer from shops harming local communities, urging citizens: "Use HMRC’s fraud reporting service to help protect our high streets."
Information from the public assists enforcement teams in identifying patterns, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Housing Secretary Angela Rayner backing the effort to focus investigations on businesses potentially breaking the law.
