Hitachi announces $479M plan to build transformer insulation factory in London, Ont.
The plant will produce pressboard for transformers and is expected to create 100 permanent skilled jobs as demand for electricity infrastructure rises.
On Friday, Hitachi Energy announced a $479 million plan to build a transformer insulation factory in London, Ontario, marking the first facility of its kind in Canada and the Americas.
Rising electricity demand from industrial growth and AI data centers has created global supply constraints for transformer components, prompting the company to strengthen North American supply chain resilience.
The federal and Ontario governments are collectively contributing $50 million, with $20 million from the federal Strategic Response Fund and $20 million via the Invest Ontario Fund.
Expected to be completed by 2028, the 21,000-square-meter facility will produce electrical insulation pressboard and laminates while creating over 100 permanent skilled jobs for local workers.
This investment advances the National Electricity Strategy, which aims to double Canada's electricity grid capacity by 2050, while creating high-value uses for Canadian forest products like pulp.
