Historic Hanging Boulder Falls at US Tourist Attraction
The 80-ton rock had hung over hikers for 104 years before it fell and damaged a railing, park officials said.
On Sunday, an 80-ton boulder at Polar Caves Park in Rumney, New Hampshire, fell after remaining in place for 104 years, blocking a section of the hiking trail on the final day of the 2026 season.
Known as the 'Mysterious Hanging Boulder,' the historic rock formation had sat above hikers' heads for over a century, with signs warning it was 'cracked all the way through and rests on 3 contact points in the back.'
Video of the aftermath revealed a trail railing smashed to pieces by the falling rock, with access to the rest of the trail cut off; the park stated, 'We are incredibly grateful no one was injured in the incident.'
The collapse occurred on the final day of the 2026 season, prompting park officials to close the affected area while they conduct a comprehensive safety assessment during the upcoming off-season.
Park officials thanked the community for their support and stated, 'We thank our guests and community for their continued support and look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 2027 season.
