US Navy Signs Off on ‘Preliminary Acceptance’ of Aircraft Carrier USS John F. Kennedy
The Navy’s second Ford-class carrier is 99% complete and will begin underway testing before formal delivery next spring.
On Tuesday, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced the John F. Kennedy reached preliminary acceptance, with the carrier departing Newport News, Virginia, for Naval Station Norfolk.
This milestone follows successful August acceptance trials for the second Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which remains approximately 99% complete as the Navy works toward its Spring 2027 delivery.
Navy program manager Mark Johnson said the milestone allows the crew to build 'underway proficiency' while shipbuilders complete final systems testing, including four remaining Advanced Weapons Elevators.
Measuring 1,092 feet and weighing 100,000 tons, the $13.2 billion vessel succeeds the USS Gerald R. Ford and enables the Navy to begin operational testing of unique systems.
Final construction and training will continue until formal delivery in Spring 2027, maintaining the fastest path toward combat readiness for the second vessel in this modern class.
The US Navy has taken preliminary delivery of the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), bringing the second unit of the Gerald R. Ford class into the final stages before its official handover, Army Recognition reported.
