High Street Retailer that Once Had 300 UK Stores Falls Into Administration
Administrators said the retailer owed £15.8m, with unsecured creditors facing about £12m in losses after the business was deemed no longer viable.
- Game Retail Limited collapsed into administration earlier this year owing £15.8 million, according to a report from joint administrators James Saunders and Lauren Wentworth of KR8 Advisory.
- Market conditions deteriorated as consumer behavior shifted from physical games to digital downloads, while Brexit uncertainty and increased sector competition compounded the retailer's struggles after its 2012 peak of 300 stores.
- Of the £15.8 million total debt, Saunders and Wentworth reported £3.5 million is owed to a secured creditor and around £12 million to unsecured creditors. The company's financial position deteriorated during the final quarter of 2025.
- Administrators concluded the business was "no longer viable" following their financial review. They anticipate sufficient realisations for the secured creditor but warned "insufficient funds available" for unsecured creditor distributions.
- With no major console releases since 2020 and manufacturers citing global chip shortages for delays, the retailer faced insurmountable hurdles adapting to a digital-first landscape favored by consumers and industry alike.
