The German government is going to intervene again regarding the rapidly rising fuel prices. "We have to do something," said Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday during a meeting with business leaders in Berlin. He did not say exactly how the government intends to help German motorists.
SPD politician Armand Zorn promotes a fuel price cap based on the Belgian model. Economy minister Katherina Reiche, on the other hand, wants to relieve population groups by means of a direct number mechanism. The association Fuels and Energy sees above all state taxes, CO2 surcharge, bio-quote and VAT as the reason for the high prices.
