Hideki Matsui Hired as Manager of the Yomiuri Giants in Japanese Baseball
On Friday, media reports confirmed that Yomiuri Giants legend Hideki Matsui has been appointed as the new manager of the storied franchise.
Following the arrest of Shinnosuke Abe in late May, the Giants sought a permanent manager and hired an "outside" manager to replace interim leader Hideki Hashigami, who guided the team to a second-place Central League finish.
Known as "Godzilla," Matsui spent 10 seasons with the club, hitting 332 home runs and recording 889 RBIs before embarking on a successful career with the New York Yankees.
Matsui, who has lived in the United States since retiring in 2012, is now returning to Japan to lead the franchise that previously employed legendary managers like Shigeo Nagashima and Sadaharu.
The team, eliminated by the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in the Climax Series earlier this month, has long sought to place the former MVP in the manager's chair.
