Hidden pension gap hits mums hardest - but here's how to claim from HMRC
HMRC says some affected parents may seek compensation after missing National Insurance credits reduced State Pension payments, with many families still waiting for the fix.
The Government delayed its 'replacement credits' scheme, originally due in 2026, until at least 2027, leaving thousands of parents in limbo regarding missing State Pension entitlement.
Since 2013, families opted out of Child Benefit to avoid the High Income Child Benefit Charge, inadvertently losing valuable National Insurance credits needed for State Pension records.
Steve Webb, former pensions minister at Lane Clark and Peacock, called the delay 'deeply frustrating,' adding that the issue has been 'a mess from the start.'
Affected parents reaching State Pension age between April 6, 2016, and 2027 can report financial losses to HMRC using the 'RCPC' reference in their complaints.
Officials advise parents with children under 12 during the eligibility period to check their cases, as many families remain unaware of the 'hidden gap' in their pension records.
