Helicopter rescue for B.C. climber stung by wasps 100 times
Rescuers deployed epinephrine and a helicopter after the climber suffered more than 100 stings and could not safely hike out.
- On Tuesday, Lions Bay Search and Rescue responded to a climber stung more than 100 times by wasps on Redoubt Wall, located about 40 kilometres north of Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway.
- Lions Bay Search requested a helicopter extraction from North Shore Rescue after determining the climber could not safely hike out, fearing a "serious systemic reaction" to the stings.
- Two advanced medical providers and a technical rescue member from North Shore Rescue reached the site, where rescuers airlifted the climber from beneath a heavy tree canopy.
- Following the successful helicopter extraction, the climber was transferred to the care of BC Emergency Health Services for further medical treatment on Tuesday evening.
- Wasp encounters can quickly become a serious backcountry medical emergency, Lions Bay Search noted, particularly when victims receive a large number of stings.
