H Pylori Exposure ‘Linked’ to 22% of Bowel Cancer Cases Worldwide
Researchers found the microbe was linked to a 1.6-fold higher bowel cancer risk, with lower estimates in cohort-based studies.
- Published in eGastroenterology on Tuesday, a new exploratory study suggests exposure to the stomach microbe Helicobacter pylori may be associated with more than 1 in 5, or 22%, of bowel cancer cases worldwide.
- Gastroenterologist Iago Rodríguez-Lago emphasized that the research uses a mathematical model rather than clinical trials, meaning an association between the bacterium and cancer does not prove the infection causes these tumors.
- Data quality significantly impacts findings; when researchers restricted analysis to the strongest-quality studies, the estimated link dropped from 22% to about 1 in 9 cases, Colorectal Cancer Researcher at King's College London Dr Rosiered Brownson-Smith noted.
- Stratified by region, the Western Pacific and Mongolia showed the highest potential links at 25% and 36% respectively, while China recorded the highest absolute number of cases linked to exposure.
- Researchers cautioned that large-scale Helicobacter eradication raises antibiotic stewardship and resistance concerns, noting that observational data suggests benefits only emerge after more than 10 years of follow-up.
