Hedgehog Spray-Painted Blue by Vandals to Look Like Sonic Dies
The rescue center said the hedgehog suffered severe burns and spines melting after being sprayed with paint, and died the next morning.
An adult male hedgehog died after being found with severe chemical burns behind Wakefield Police Station on Tuesday, October 27. The animal was rushed to Castleford Hedgehog Rescue but died the following morning.
Beth Campsill, who runs the charity, called it the worst case of spray paint-based cruelty she has seen in her 16 years. She believes the substance was spray paint due to its 'thick texture' and how it burned the skin.
The hedgehog was also suffering from 'flystrike,' dying from infection and potential toxin poisoning. Beth said, 'When the hedgehog was brought to us he was screaming in pain,' providing maximum pain relief before his death.
Beth confirmed she intends to report the incident to police but remains uncertain whether the perpetrator will be 'held responsible' given the discovery location behind Wakefield Police Station.
Hedgehogs are listed as 'vulnerable' on Britain's red list of mammals, with populations falling by up to 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas since the turn of the century.
