Winter Storm Brings Fresh Hardship to Displaced Gazans
Storm Byron flooded over 850,000 displaced Palestinians in 761 Gaza camps, worsening shelter and aid shortages amid ongoing reconstruction challenges, the United Nations reported.
- Starting late Wednesday, Storm Byron's heavy winter rains swept across the Gaza Strip, flooding tents and makeshift shelters and causing one death when a wall collapsed, Gaza's civil defence said.
- Destroyed infrastructure left Gaza unable to drain heavy rains, and aid shortages have left displaced families without fuel or medicine; the October truce partly eased restrictions but the United Nations says supplies remain insufficient.
- In Zeitoun, a child walked barefoot carrying two empty 20-litre jerrycans to a temporary water station while residents dug trenches and sheltered under tent awnings during the downpour.
- A UN report found 761 displacement sites hosting about 850,000 people are at high risk of flooding, while Gaza's civil defence said teams responded Thursday to three houses partially collapsed by heavy rain.
- With Gaza's winter rains, durable housing is urgent as Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza's civil defence agency, said more aid is needed for long-term shelters and mobile homes equipped with solar power.
