King Rides in a Tank on Visit to Dorset
The King presented medals, met families and inspected the army’s newest battle tank before taking a ride in a Challenger 2.
On Monday, July 6, 2026, King Charles III visited the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, for the Royal Tank Regiment Families' Day, arriving aboard a historic 1920 Pattern Rolls-Royce armoured car.
Serving as Colonel-in-Chief since 2023, the King attended the event to celebrate personnel and their families during the regiment's "day for the relatives of the regiment."
Outside the Tank Story Hall, the King presented medals to soldiers, including those serving in Estonia for Operation Cabrit, before inspecting the Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank.
Wearing a crew guard helmet, the King sat in the commander's seat for a ride in a Challenger 2 tank, joking the 1920 Pattern Rolls-Royce he arrived in was "Very slow."
The visit included a tour of the Tank Story Hall, where staff showcased technological innovations and tank history from the First World War, a period the late Queen marked in 1997 during the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cambrai.
