Heatwave conditions predicted for large parts of Australia
Heatwave, gusty winds and dry lightning create extreme bushfire danger across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, despite a La Niña climate pattern, officials said.
- On Saturday the Bureau of Meteorology said heatwave conditions will peak with temperatures reaching 40C and above in multiple locations, triggering extreme fire danger warnings across New South Wales.
- Heat combined with gusty winds and a very dry atmosphere will overlap with scattered, fast-moving storms that can produce dry lightning, Bureau meteorologist Sarah Scully said.
- Fire authorities report total fire bans across eastern NSW and Greater Sydney, with temperatures around 39C in Sydney CBD, above 40C in Western Sydney, and 41C at Penrith; 57 bushfires burn, nine uncontained.
- Firefighters and incident management personnel are strengthening containment lines while total fire bans restrict activities across affected regions; smoke from western NSW fires is likely to impact the Hunter and parts of Sydney.
- Cities should prioritize urban heat adaptation, as the National Climate Risk Assessment warned heat-related deaths could rise 444 per cent in Sydney and 259 per cent in Melbourne under 3 degrees warming, with Western Sydney's costs exceeding $1 billion annually, Waterford said.
