August heat wave deemed a 'rare event' by Météo-France
The recent heat wave ranks among the most severe ever experienced in the south of France, rivaling the historic August 2003 event, according to the French weather forecasting adminstration. It was also the second-longest recorded in August.
While temperatures have fallen on the country, Météo France today referred to the last heat wave that hit the hexagon. Very intense, it was not as strong as the heat wave of 2003 if one looks at the whole territory. In the South-West, on the other hand, Météo France sets a parallel with 2003. - The recent heat wave "not comparable" to 2003... except in the South-West (Weather and Weather).
In Toulouse and Bordeaux, the maximum temperatures were, on average, one to two degrees higher than in 2003.
With 27 days in heat wave, summer 2025 is now ranked second for the number of days in heat wave behind 2022 that had experienced 33 during three distinct heat waves
Although the heat wave of August 2025 did not match 2003 nationally, in the South West and in Charente, it was even more intense. Angoulême, Cognac, Bordeaux or Carcassonne broke records.
