Not only Switzerland suffered from record temperatures in 2026: in Austria the hottest summer of the 260-year measurement history has been recorded.
The average air temperature over the summer was 2.6 degrees above the climate mean 1991 to 2020 and even 4.4 degrees above that of the period 1961 to 1990.
2026 writes weather history: Austria experienced the hottest summer since the beginning of the measurement. There were records in temperatures, heat days and tropical nights – at the same time one third of the rain was missing.
Several heat waves with temperatures above 40 degrees, sometimes extremely low levels of rivers, lakes and groundwater and an unprecedented drought with crop failures, along with the danger of forest fire, all these clear indications confirm what is now official according to data from GeoSphere Austria: The summer of 2026 was the hottest of the past 260 years and one of the five driest.
