Healey asks Navy for help retrieving "key piece of equipment" from sunken fishing vessel Lily Jean

Healey says the footage could help explain the sinking and support safety recommendations after seven crew members were lost.

  • Governor Maura Healey and State Senator Bruce Tarr sent a letter Monday to U.S. Navy Secretary Hung Cao requesting assistance retrieving a "key piece of equipment" from the Lily Jean, which sank off the coast of Gloucester in January.
  • On January 30, the 72-foot Lily Jean sank about 25 miles off Cape Ann, killing all seven people on board; neither the National Transportation Safety Board nor the U.S. Coast Guard intends to lead an effort to recover the vessel or its equipment.
  • Massachusetts State Police reported that a video recorder and hard drive on the vessel likely remain intact, and the manufacturer believes the footage is retrievable. Healey stated this evidence could provide essential details about the vessel's final moments and help prevent future maritime disasters.
  • The Office of the Secretary of the Navy confirmed Saturday that they received the letter and are preparing a response. Additionally, the governor requested the Navy assess the feasibility of recovering the remains of six crew members still lost at sea, respecting each family's wishes.
