All Schools in Johor to Close for Two Days Amid Worsening Haze
Home-based lessons will continue and assessments will be postponed as 617,258 students are affected, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali announced all schools in Johor will close on Oct 8 and 9 following a directive from Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to protect student health.
- Deteriorating air quality across the state prompted the closure, with Batu Pahat recording an Air Pollutant Index of 203 on Tuesday night, marking the highest reading in Malaysia within the 'very unhealthy' range.
- The closure affects 617,258 students across 1,198 schools under the Education Ministry, with home-based teaching sessions continuing. Assessments including the Year Four Learning Matrix will be postponed by the Johor Education Department.
- Muhammad Naqib urged employers to provide work flexibility for affected parents and advised guardians to monitor children's health. "Parents or guardians need to seek immediate medical attention if their children experience coughing, sore throat or shortness of breath," he said.
- Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to convene an emergency meeting to address the regional haze crisis, while state agencies continue monitoring API readings.
