In both Hasselt and Kortessem, the city council approved the merger between the two municipalities. This happened during a separate but simultaneous city council in both places where only one item was on the agenda. From 2025, the merged city of Hasselt will thus be the sixth largest city in Flanders with 89,000 inhabitants. The name Kortessem will be retained as the name of the district.
