Harassed by Russian drones, Ukraine’s trains keep on rolling
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Ukrainian civilians continue relying on the rail network despite escalating Russian drone and missile attacks forcing frequent, lengthy travel delays across the country.
The state operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, reports Russia has attacked more than 1,700 rail facilities this year, including stations, locomotives, and passenger wagons targeting transport infrastructure.
Conductors close curtains to block light from drones while passengers endure evacuations during air-raid sirens; more than 50 railway workers have died on duty this year alone.
On October 28, Ukraine's 1st National Guard Corps Azov reported that drone strikes have disabled Russian locomotives and fuel tank cars supporting military operations in occupied eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces have struck more than 100 Russian trains used for logistics, aiming to restrict fuel deliveries to frontline forces in occupied eastern Ukraine, according to Azov.
