Hansen, Artemis II crew to meet with Carney during event-filled day in Ottawa
The crew is meeting students and stakeholders as NASA says Artemis II is the first step toward returning humans to the moon and Mars.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Canadian Jeremy Hansen and the Artemis II crew to Ottawa for a day of official meetings and public outreach events in the capital.
The 10-day Artemis II mission took the crew farther from Earth than any humans in history, establishing the foundation for future crewed lunar exploration and deep-space discovery.
Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jenni Gibbons joined the crew at the Canadian Museum of Nature for student outreach, followed by a sold-out public discussion at the National Arts Centre later Wednesday.
Carney presented Hansen with the Canadian flag that flew over Parliament's Peace Tower during the mission's conclusion, while Hansen gifted a framed patch that traveled aboard the Orion spacecraft.
NASA plans to launch the Artemis IIl mission next year, aiming to return humans to the lunar surface and establish Canada's role in long-term space exploration beyond the moon.
Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and the other three crew members of the Artemis II mission to his office on Wednesday afternoon. "This is the first time we've had a conversation on Earth," he said laughing.
