Two Charged After Baby’s Remains Found Could Face ‘Additional Very Serious Charges’: Crown
Police say the Crown may seek additional charges after remains of a missing newborn were found in a wooded area.
Two people charged with concealing a child's body appeared virtually in Halifax provincial court Monday following discovery of newborn remains in a wooded area outside Halifax after a 23-year-old woman arrived at hospital Friday night in critical condition.
Officers were dispatched Friday night to a hospital after paramedics brought the 23-year-old woman in poor condition; doctors determined she had recently given birth, but the newborn was missing from the Willett Street apartment in Clayton Park.
More than 60 search and rescue volunteers scoured the area throughout the weekend after police learned of a second location, with remains discovered Sunday at around 3:20 p.m. in a wooded area about 10 kilometres from the initial search site.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his wife Ramandeep Kaur, 26, are charged with concealing the body of a child, two counts of obstruction, offering an indignity to a dead body, and resisting a peace officer, and will remain in custody pending Thursday's bail hearing.
Investigators continue gathering evidence with potential for additional serious charges, according to Chief Crown lawyer Paul Carver, while an autopsy was scheduled to determine the infant's cause of death and confirm identity.
