Halifax could close after 173 years on high street as future in question
Lloyds says existing Halifax customers would be moved to Lloyds Bank, while new accounts would stop this summer, The Sun reported.
Lloyds Banking Group is reportedly planning to phase out the Halifax brand later this year, potentially ending 173 years of banking history.
The reported transition begins July 1, when customers can no longer open new Halifax accounts online or through the app, with existing holders migrating to Lloyds Bank by October.
If the phase-out proceeds, customers will retain existing account numbers and automatic protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme , remaining unaffected.
This follows a 2025 overhaul allowing Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland to share branches and mobile services, leaving the group with 610 total locations after current closures.
While Halifax and Lloyds serve England and Wales, the Bank of Scotland operates solely in Scotland; recent investments in Halifax's Trinity Road office signal ongoing commitment to the town.
