Nainital Police Register FIR Against ‘Unknown Persons’ for Performing ‘Purification’ of Mallikarjun Kharge’s Rally Venue
Police booked unknown persons under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the SC/ST Act after a complaint alleged caste discrimination and social humiliation.
- On Tuesday, the Nainital Police lodged a First Information Report against unknown persons regarding a purification ritual conducted at Haldwani's Ramlila Maidan following a rally addressed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on August 8.
- The ritual was conducted on August 11 by members of the Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas Sangathan, sparking allegations from Congress leaders that it targeted Kharge due to his Dalit identity; organizers have denied any caste motive.
- Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police Manjunath TC said the FIR was registered under Sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act, based on a complaint by Anju Arya.
- Following the registration, the state government assured the Uttarakhand High Court of a thorough investigation, with Nainital Superintendent of Police Jagdish Chandra tasked to lead the inquiry and collect all electronic evidence including CCTV footage.
- Separately, BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt defended the ritual as a response to venue pollution from slogans raised at the site, while police last week lodged a case against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on the matter.
