Hacker trying to breach US Federal Election Commission system, email shows
The outage blocks 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports as the FEC works to restore service, reducing disclosure before the midterm elections.
- On Monday, the Federal Election Commission 'temporarily shut down' its web-facing services following a hacker attempt, with the electronic filing system offline since around 10 p.m. ET while IT staff work to restore service.
- The hacking attempts occur one week before midterm elections, which will determine whether President Donald Trump's Republicans maintain majorities in Congress for the next two years.
- Steven Mele, a partner at MBA Consulting Group, said, 'I've never seen this in 26 years,' as the outage prevents organizations from filing mandatory 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports.
- The FEC does not administer elections, so the outage will not affect voters' ability to cast ballots. The FBI and The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency did not immediately return requests for comment.
- Users can still search the FEC website for past reports despite the filing disruption. The agency declined further comment on the outage status.
