World Gymnastics Lifts All Restrictions on Russian and Belarusian Athletes
The federation dropped eligibility limits and said teams can compete under national flags and anthems across all five disciplines.
On Monday, the World Gymnastics Executive Committee lifted all restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, allowing them to compete immediately under their national flags and anthems for the first time since February 2022.
Previously, Russian and Belarusian gymnasts were subject to strict vetting as Individual Neutral Athletes , competing without flags or anthems and subject to military affiliation requirements the federation has now dropped.
This reversal aligns with recent moves by World Aquatics and United World Wrestling, while the 2026 World Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam will serve as a team qualifier for the 2028 Olympic Games.
World Gymnastics offered no justification for the decision, which deviates from International Olympic Committee recommendations to exclude Russian athletes. The International Figure Skating Federation continues to ban both countries entirely.
The shift impacts athletes like Angelina Melnikova, who previously competed as a neutral athlete. Ukraine maintains that athletes from the Central Sports Club of the Army represent the armed forces of the aggressor state.
The International Gymnastics Federation, in turn, lifted restrictions against Russians and Belarusians after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, following the example of judo and swimming, it announced on Monday.
