PM Modi condoles deaths in Gwalior accident, announces Rs 2L ex gratia relief for each

  • On Sunday, a speeding truck killed 14 devotees and injured 28 others outside the Sheetla Mata temple in Gwalior, crashing into the entrance gate early in the morning.
  • The truck, bearing a Punjab registration, entered a restricted no-entry zone on Chinor Road near the shrine. "The accident occurred because the truck entered a prohibited area," Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav told reporters.
  • Following the tragedy, Yadav ordered a probe and removed the Gwalior City Superintendent of Police from his post. He also suspended eight personnel, including three station house officers and a traffic inspector.
  • The government announced ₹4 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased, ₹50,000 for minor injuries, and full treatment expenses for the seriously injured. Pawan Rathore, 23, of Gadaipur in Gwalior's Hazira area, was among those killed.
  • Relatives of victims expressed anger, questioning how a heavy truck could access a restricted area. Lokendra Singh Tomar, nephew of deceased Sarla Tomar, asked how the vehicle was allowed to enter the temple premises.
