South Africa: Dimpane Commends Police for Courageous Response to Robertson Armed Standoff
Dimpane praised officers for rescuing two women and ending the gun battle after a 40-year-old suspect was killed, while one police official was wounded.
A two-day standoff in De Hoop, Robertson, ended on Monday when the 40-year-old gunman was shot dead by the Special Task Force, leaving one police officer injured with a shoulder wound.
Officers arrived Sunday evening responding to a complaint that a man fired shots at a neighbour's vehicle. Upon arrival, police immediately came under fire, forcing them to call for backup.
Special Task Force members tactically gained entry to the property and rescued two women from a neighbouring house. Police seized an assault rifle, a shotgun, and two pistols from the scene.
The Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, commended the "swift and courageous" intervention by officers. Independent Police Investigative Directorate officials were summoned to open an inquest docket.
Dimpane reaffirmed the South African Police Service's commitment to protecting communities, stating "We will not retreat in the face of violence." Police safety remains a priority when members face heavily armed individuals.
