Guides in Minnesota's Northwest Angle provide unique way to harvest ducks
The guides say the technique puts hunters among the ducks and can bring in as many as 10 hunters and 60 birds in a few hours.
Reaves, owner of Reaves Fins and Feathers, and Forrest Huset, owner of Angling Addicts, guide waterfowl hunters on Lake of the Woods using layout boats in Minnesota's Northwest Angle.
Layout boat hunting is permitted on only five Minnesota waters, positioning Lake of the Woods as a rare destination across the Upper Midwest for this specialized waterfowl technique.
Reaves and Huset require a group minimum of four hunters per trip at around $300 daily per person, with decoy lines placed between 25 and 40 yards from the boats.
Hunting from layout boats presents technical challenges as vessels bounce with waves, creating a narrow shooting window "between your 8 o'clock and your 2 o'clock," requiring hunters to lead birds 5 to 12 feet.
The hunting season concludes on the first Sunday after Halloween, marking Reaves's hard cutoff for guided layout boat hunts before guides transition to other seasonal fishing and hunting pursuits.
