Minnesota hunters choose to stay with current daily duck limit
More than 1,000 hunters responded to the survey, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said most favored keeping the current regulation.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will maintain the current six-duck daily bag limit, rejecting a proposed three-duck alternative that would have simplified harvest regulations regarding duck species and sex identification.
Officials proposed the three-duck limit to simplify identification and attract new hunters who find current species-specific rules challenging; Nate Huck, migratory game bird consultant with the DNR, noted that recruitment of new participants has declined in recent years.
The DNR received feedback from more than 1,000 hunters, with 993 responding to the questionnaire and 60 sending emails; the majority favored retaining the six-duck regulation, citing the value of species identification.
Forrest Huset, a waterfowl hunting guide in the Northwest Angle, said reducing to three ducks would have been "a pretty small bag limit," adding that combining activities like fishing helps recruitment: "It can be a good recruitment tool."
States testing the three-bird bag limit are participating in a five-year evaluation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Minnesota may reconsider the alternative once flyways complete this assessment and issue recommendations.
