Guardians reliever Nic Enright, battling lymphoma, earns emotional first save

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OHIO, AUG 5 – Enright earned his first Major League save while undergoing immunotherapy and helped the Guardians win 17 of 24 games since July, manager Stephen Vogt said.

  • On Monday night at Citi Field, Guardians rookie Nic Enright earned his first Major League save, allowing an unearned run in the 10th inning of a 7-6 win over the Mets.
  • On Dec. 22, 2022, Enright was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is scheduled to complete his treatments later this year.
  • After Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith pitched the eighth and ninth innings, Enright entered with a two-run lead, gave up a two-out RBI single to Brett Baty before retiring Luis Torrens on a fly out to right.
  • Vogt said Enright was almost crying on the field and was showered with beer by teammates in the locker room.
  • Enright says he decided not to let the illness define him and that coping off the field has sharpened his focus on the mound.
