'Gruffalo Granny' coming for a visit in September
Gruffalo Granny, the third book in the series, returns beloved characters and supports childhood literacy with over 18 million copies sold worldwide, publisher Macmillan announced.
- Children's author Julia Donaldson announced Gruffalo Granny will be published on September 10, 2026, Macmillan confirmed.
- Spurred by the National Literacy Trust, Donaldson said she had the basic idea long ago but only developed it after their Early Words Matter programme, with more than 20 years since The Gruffalo's Child.
- Axel Scheffler, illustrator, will illustrate the new book, and his never-seen-before illustration will be projected in central London and Glasgow on Friday evening; Mouse, Fox, Snake, and Owl will return.
- The Gruffalo franchise has long-reaching sales, with the series topping 18 million combined sales in 115 languages and more than 13.4 million copies of The Gruffalo sold worldwide.
- Donaldson recently overtook JK Rowling as the UK's most-published children's author, having sold more than 48.6 million copies and published 184 works at age 77.
