First Brazilian-Built Gripen E Makes Maiden Flight
The aircraft begins acceptance testing before delivery to the Brazilian Air Force, as Embraer says 10 of the 36 jets have already been handed over.
- On Wednesday, Embraer announced the first Gripen E fighter assembled in Brazil completed its maiden flight at the company's industrial complex in São Paulo.
- Designated F-39E and registered as FAB 4109, this aircraft is the first of 15 fighters to be produced in Brazil under the 2014 $4.5 billion contract covering 36 total aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force.
- The flight checked the aircraft's main systems and flight characteristics, generating data for acceptance work. "This maiden flight shows that Gripen production in Brazil has reached a new level of maturity," said Marcus Wandt, head of Saab Aeronautics.
- Once acceptance testing is complete, the aircraft will be delivered to the Brazilian Air Force and transferred to Anápolis Air Base, home of the First Air Defense Group.
- Brazil and Sweden are currently negotiating a follow-on batch of 20 additional fighters as Saab links expansion to global demand, following orders for Colombia and Ukraine announced earlier this year.
