Grifols Supports AlphaDetect to Accelerate Detection of Alpha-1
The sponsorship will expand free genetic testing and provider support as more than 90% of Alpha-1 cases remain undetected, officials said.
On Friday, Durham-based nonprofit AlphaDetect announced global healthcare company Grifols as its inaugural industry sponsor to accelerate detection of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.
More than 90% of affected individuals remain unidentified despite potential for irreversible liver and lung damage, while clinical guidelines recommend testing for patients with COPD, treatment-resistant asthma, or unexplained liver disease.
Grifols' sponsorship builds on a three-decade-long commitment to the Alpha-1 community, which has already seen more than 1.5 million people screened through the company's testing program.
Scott Santarella, CEO of the Alpha-1 Foundation, said "By expanding these efforts through AlphaDetect, we can identify more individuals earlier and deliver on A1F's mission of improving their lives."
The Alpha-1 Foundation has invested over $100 million to support research and programs at 130 institutions worldwide, while AlphaDetect provides free genetic testing to eliminate barriers to detection.
