Greece announces 30% increase in heating allowance
The package includes a direct pump subsidy and wider fuel discounts as Greece tries to ease pressure on households and energy-intensive industries.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis announced a 30% increase in the annual heating allowance and a direct pump subsidy to combat surging energy costs.
The announcement follows calls from Greece for Europe to relax spending rules, enabling governments to support households amid record-high fuel prices reaching across several countries.
Pierrakakis said the dual strategy aims to "ease the pressure on families" during a difficult economic climate, with measures designed to support hundreds of thousands of households nationwide.
Several governments across Europe are responding similarly; Germany introduced a 17 cents per litre fuel duty cut on October 1, while Spain extended existing fuel tax cuts.
Both Germany and Spain will maintain their fuel measures through December, as ministries are expected to present further details of the support package on Wednesday.
"In a difficult international situation, with the energy crisis testing the resilience of households around the world, our priority is to limit the pressure on families," he emphasized.
