‘Great interest and broad support’ for nuclear energy in Alberta: panel

- On Wednesday, Alberta Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf released the Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel report, showing strong public interest in nuclear power despite significant concerns about radioactive waste management.
- A panel survey of 1,274 respondents conducted last month found 67 per cent supported nuclear energy development in Alberta, though 60 per cent expressed concerns about waste storage and 56 per cent worried about safe management.
- Energy Alberta proposes a 4,800-megawatt plant near Peace River covering about 14 square kilometres, capable of generating enough electricity to power close to five million homes.
- Opposition NDP energy critic Nagwan Al-Guneid questioned who would pay for development, stating, "We haven't seen a single nuclear project worldwide that was not subsidized by public money."
- Neudorf announced the province will develop a nuclear roadmap expected in early 2027 to establish regulatory framework and legislation so industry understands Alberta's expectations.
