The collapse of three floors of a seven-story building in Maltepe has brought the issue of risky buildings in Istanbul back to the forefront. According to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality data, rapid screening tests were conducted on approximately 40,000 buildings, and 18,800 buildings constructed before 1999 were found to be at high or very high risk.

Inspections in Istanbul have revealed that 1,238 buildings are at risk of collapsing at any moment. According to a report prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, approximately half of the 40,000 buildings inspected were found to be in the "high-risk" category.
