EU Streamlines Visa Process for Turks as Talks on Visa-Free Travel Revive
TURKEY, JUL 18 – The EU introduced longer multiple-entry visas for Turkish citizens and urged resuming visa-free travel talks to address longstanding visa complaints, the ambassador said.
- On July 15, Ambassador Thomas Hans Ossowski said the EU eased visa rules for Turkish citizens, making access to the Schengen area faster and easier.
- Ongoing concerns prompted Turkey’s EU candidacy, leading to visa liberalisation efforts, but accession remains frozen over human rights and democratic backsliding, Ambassador Ossowski said.
- Under the new rules, Turkish citizens become eligible for longer-term visas as early as their second application, with accredited visa agencies managing slow processes and efforts to speed up with Ankara.
- The European Union ambassador reported eased rules for Turks and said `it is urgent to re-engage in this process of visa-free travel in the Schengen space and the EU`, warning that new rules will not fully resolve long-standing complaints.
