'HORRIFIC THING TO WITNESS' | Man Shares Account of Deadly Plane Crash
KELVINHAUGH, NEAR TOOWOOMBA, QUEENSLAND, JUL 20 – Investigators from Brisbane and Canberra are examining the crash of a twin turboprop plane that killed two men after hitting a paddock and catching fire, Queensland Police said.
- A small single-engine kit aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Montrose Regional Airport, Colorado, on June 23, killing two men aboard.
- The crash occurred as the plane, bound for Florida, failed to gain adequate altitude and speed, and struck a small hill about 0.7 miles from the runway.
- Authorities identified the victims as 61-year-old Lawrence W. Skinner and 53-year-old Alejandro D. Antunez, both pilots, with investigations ongoing by federal and local agencies.
- The aircraft, built from a 2008 kit with amphibious floats and a Vedeneyev radial engine, lacked current FAA registration, and the NTSB reported a Special Flight Permit for the planned flight.
- The Montrose County Coroner's Office continues to investigate cause and manner of death, while the FAA and NTSB gather flight data and evidence from the crash site.
