Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, whose wife was NDP MLA, endorses BC Green Leader Lowan
Phillip said Lowan is a strong ally for Indigenous peoples and environmental stewardship, citing her climate approach as the key reason for his endorsement.
On Friday, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip endorsed Green Party Leader Emily Lowan for Saanich North and the Islands, praising her as a "strong and courageous ally for Indigenous peoples in B.C." with a "proactive, principled, evidence-based approach" to climate solutions.
Phillip, a longtime British Columbia NDP ally whose late wife Joan Phillip served as an NDP legislator, broke with Premier David Eby earlier this year over his handling of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
In his statement posted by Lowan, Phillip said the Green leader's climate understanding and "proactive, principled, evidence-based approach" to finding solutions were key reasons for his endorsement of the candidate in a riding the Greens have held for three elections.
While endorsing Lowan, Phillip reaffirmed strong support for the British Columbia NDP under Eby, calling him "the best choice as leader of this province" and urging voters to place their trust in him.
The endorsement arrives as the provincial election campaign enters its final weekend before the October 24 vote, potentially reshaping vote-splitting dynamics in a Vancouver Island riding critical to Green Party hopes.
