Spy watchdog flags privacy risk from military's online intelligence activities
NSIRA said military officers used informal collection methods and third-party data providers, raising legal risks and leaving no official records for some operations.
Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Review Agency found that the Defence Department and Canadian Armed Forces may legally collect publicly available online information for intelligence purposes.
The agency said military policies do not sufficiently address privacy risks associated with online intelligence searches and the analysis of information about Canadians.
The review found that the military does not systematically link online collection activities to approved operations or defence activities.
The agency said military policies and records do not adequately show that collecting information involving Canadians is necessary or protect their privacy.
