Gov. Ferguson Announces Partial Reopening of SR 2 After Floods Wash Out Road Near Leavenworth
Gov. Bob Ferguson will provide a repair update on U.S. Highway 2 after heavy December rainfall caused landslides and washed-away pavement, with emergency work ongoing since Dec. 20.
- On Friday, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson announced SR-2 will partially reopen Monday at 6 a.m. between Coles Corner and Stevens Pass, using a pilot-car system for the final one-lane stretch.
- Historic heavy rainfall earlier this month carved away large sections of US 2, destroyed drainage systems and sent guardrails tumbling into the river east of Leavenworth, WSDOT said.
- WSDOT said emergency work began Dec. 20 and the state signed a 30-day, $800,000 contract to repair a 12-mile section, even as Governor Bob Ferguson cautioned full repairs could take months.
- Local business owners said customer traffic dropped sharply with shortened hours, while detours via Chumstick Highway and State Route 207 add around 22 miles and 20 minutes of travel time.
- WSDOT estimates reopening at least one lane in the Tumwater Canyon section in mid-to-late March, but winter weather and snow-clearing needs will delay some repairs despite a 30-day cleanup timeline.
