GOP Senator Says Spring Breakers Should Cancel Mexico Plans
Travel advisories remain for parts of Mexico after cartel leader's death triggered unrest; over 55,000 Canadians registered with Global Affairs Canada, officials said.
On Feb. 23, the U.S. Department of State warned U.S. citizens to shelter in place in several locations including Puerto Vallarta, noting fewer affected cities and most airports operating normally.
Mexican security forces killed Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, on Sunday, Feb. 22, triggering unrest including torched vehicles and highway blockades in over a dozen states.
Multiple carriers announced they would resume flights to affected destinations on Tuesday after weekend suspensions, with Porter Airlines offering complimentary changes and WestJet reviewing routes before returning.
Travel insurers warn refunds are unlikely for cancellations made after the advisory, with Martin Firestone noting carriers won’t refund fares if flights remain available as more than 55,000 Canadians had registered with Global Affairs Canada by Tuesday.
With spring break approaching, security experts and former intelligence officers urged travellers to reconsider trips within the next 48 hours due to ongoing risks in Mexico.
