Google's Gemini for Home Is Bringing Back Continued Conversations
The update keeps the microphone active for a few seconds and adds smarter Side-Talk detection, Google said.
- On Tuesday, Google announced that the Gemini assistant on Google Home is gaining a "continued conversations" feature, allowing users to ask follow-up questions without repeating the "Hey Google" wake word.
- Google Home speakers supported this functionality for years under the original Google Assistant platform, and Redditors reported the feature was "really missed" and described the previous experience as "very awkward".
- The assistant now "retains the conversational context of your previous exchange" to improve interaction flow, and the system features smarter "Side-Talk" detection to better distinguish between follow-up commands and random background conversation.
- Unlike the older implementation limited to US-only, this version works across all supported languages and regions, and users must manually enable the setting within the Google Home app under "Gemini" settings.
- Google is currently providing early access to the feature for Gemini users without requiring a subscription, and eventually, this platform will fully replace Google Assistant, though the company has not provided a wider release date.
