Google Wants Search To Stop Answering And Start Acting

Google unveiled sweeping AI upgrades for Search at I/O 2026, introducing a reimagined "intelligent search box" and establishing Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model for AI Mode globally.
Billed as the "biggest upgrade to the Search box in over 25 years," the redesign supports longer, conversational queries while AI Mode now serves over 1 billion monthly users worldwide.
Google also introduced "Search agents" designed to monitor information and perform tasks 24/7, allowing users to provide specific requirements for agents to scan sources and notify them when relevant listings appear.
Expanding its agentic capabilities, the company announced "agentic coding" powered by Google Antigravity to build custom tools, alongside "Personal Intelligence" features now reaching nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages.
Coming this summer, new agentic booking and coding features will roll out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Universal Cart will follow shopping research across services to flag product incompatibilities.
